English

Support

A solid foundation in English language is key to future opportunities. Studies have shown that enhanced English skills lead to better job opportunities and an improved social life; it is our aim that all students be given the chance to improve their literacy and communication skills so that these opportunities are open to them in their adult lives. During a student’s time at On Track they will build upon, and cement, their foundation knowledge in literacy. They will study the differences between formal and informal communication, such as wording emails and letters appropriately, as well as being exposed to different genres of literature and the various literary techniques that are the building blocks of writing.

Nurture

The English and Literacy programs are specially designed to meet, and challenge, the needs of the students. Lessons are delivered using; sensory play, visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic teaching techniques so that students are afforded the best possible progression outcomes. Students have regular verbal and written feedback and are encouraged to take ownership of their development while in school, and reflect on how the skills they learn at On Track will serve them in wider society.

Inspire

Literature provides readers the opportunity to explore different backgrounds, perspectives, cultures, and identities within their pages, but it is also important that we can recognise ourselves. Students will encounter a diverse range of carefully chosen texts so they are given the opportunity to:

  • explore their own identity, reflect upon the society in which they live, and their relationships to others
  • build the skills they need in order to use English effectively in their everyday lives beyond formal education

Empower

Students will have the opportunity to sit recognised qualifications in English Language (Step Up silver or gold, Functional skills, and GCSE), which will enable students to progress onto college or a chosen apprenticeship. We understand how stressful sitting exams can be; therefore, students have lessons dedicated to exam preparation and exam strategies. This process of familiarisation and preparation means that students gain the confidence and experience they need to feel as comfortable as possible during their exams.
