Citizenship

Support

The key areas to be developed in the subject are an understanding of how the British parliament is constructed, what democracy means and understanding the importance of participating in the democratic process and how their participation can influence their future as British citizens.

The students will also learn the importance of the ‘Rule of Law’; laws created by the British government should be fair and applied equally to everyone; punishment cannot be carried out without court decisions and understanding the types of punishment applicable for breaking British law.

Students will understand the meaning of the term ‘individual liberty’ and learn the benefits to be gained by it. They will also learn how this works alongside mutual respect

Nurture

The qualification provides a basic understanding of the core concepts associated with British values, extremism, radicalisation, and the basic principles of keeping safe from the risk of radicalisation online. The lessons allow for discussion of specific topics, so that students can learn to form their own opinions, learn to empathise with others point of view and to understand that it is ok for people to have different opinions. Real life examples are used to form the discussions via the use of videos, newspapers, magazine articles, news reports and online information. Students will be supported to develop the confidence to express views assertively and positively as well as being able to tolerate and accept alternative views.

Where additional reasonable adjustments are required, to help a student with a disability access their learning, this will be discussed individually with the student.

Inspire

Regardless of their knowledge at the starting point, all students will be encouraged to challenge their current beliefs and values against what is presented in the lesson. The students will be introduced to new topics and concepts that they may never have considered previously, to help them expand their thoughts and views on the world. This will help them to develop the adult skills required to participate fully in all areas of a healthy functioning community.

Empower

Students can access different levels of this qualification.

They can develop their early understanding and skills by accessing a range of AQA units at either entry level 2 or 3 including, Identity of Discrimination, Effects of Crime, Prevent, Rule of Law, Personal Liberty and Tolerance etc.

They can also gain a nationally recognised OFQUAL qualification via the Gateway Qualifications at Entry 3 and Level 1.

The skills from these qualifications will help the students to have a good understanding of British values, help them to identify extremism and radicalisation, encourage them to contribute to their community and take part in voting and influencing their future.
