At On Track Education, we take a whole-school approach to promoting good attendance. Every day in school matters, and we are committed to helping each pupil make the most of their time with us, both academically, socially, and in support of their mental health and wellbeing.
We recognise that attending school regularly can sometimes be challenging. That is why we work in partnership with pupils, parents and carers to understand any barriers, put support in place, and ensure every young person can benefit fully from their education.
Why Attendance Matters
Regular attendance is essential for:
Academic progress and achievement – lessons build on each other, and missing school makes it harder to keep up.
Building friendships and social skills – being in school helps pupils develop positive relationships and a sense of belonging.
Supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing – daily routines and trusted adults provide security, structure and support.
Preparing for future opportunities – good attendance builds resilience and reliability, skills that are valued in further education, training and employment.
Expectations and Responsibilities
- Full-time pupils attend school for 25 hours per week during term time.
- Pupils are expected to attend every day, unless an absence is authorised by the school.
- Parents and carers must inform the school before 9.00am if their child is unable to attend, providing a clear and acceptable reason.
- Medical or other evidence may be requested to authorise certain absences.
- We monitor attendance closely and will contact families where there are concerns, so that we can work together to improve patterns of attendance.
Term-Time Holidays
In line with national guidance, term-time holidays will not be authorised. Taking holidays during term time disrupts learning and can harm progress, especially for pupils who already find school challenging.
Any requests for leave of absence must be made in advance and in writing. Only in exceptional circumstances will the school consider authorising leave, and this is at the Headteacher’s discretion.
Celebrating Good Attendance
We believe in recognising and celebrating positive attendance. Across our schools we:
- Highlight and praise good and improving attendance in tutor time and assemblies.
- Use incentives and rewards to encourage pupils to attend regularly.
- Promote positive messages about attendance in classrooms, corridors and communications with families
Our focus is on building a culture where pupils want to be in school and feel proud of their attendance.
Support with Attendance
We understand that some pupils and families face genuine challenges that can affect attendance. If you are worried about your child’s attendance, please talk to us as early as possible. We can:
- Offer advice, guidance and practical strategies to help with routines and anxiety around school.
- Work with other professionals and agencies where additional support is needed.
- Put tailored plans in place to help pupils return to, and maintain, regular attendance.
If you need support, please contact your school office or Family Liaison Officer, who will be happy to help.
Working Together
Good attendance is a shared responsibility. By working in partnership with families, we can ensure that every pupil has the best possible chance to thrive in school, in learning and in life.
