Attendance

At On Track Northampton, we take a whole school approach to promoting good attendance. We are committed to helping every pupil make the most of their time at school, academically, socially, and in support of their mental health and wellbeing.

We understand that attending school regularly can be challenging at times. That’s why we have systems and support in place to help pupils overcome barriers and benefit fully from their education.

Why Attendance Matters

Regular attendance is essential for:

  • Academic progress and achievement
  • Building friendships and social skills
  • Supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Preparing for future opportunities
Expectations and Responsibilities

Full-time pupils attend school for 25 hours per week during term time.

Pupils are expected to attend unless an absence is authorised.

Parents and carers must inform the school before 9am if their child is unable to attend, providing an acceptable reason.

We work closely with families to support improved attendance where needed.

Celebrating Good Attendance

We actively encourage and reward pupils for good attendance through:

  • Recognition and praise
  • Incentives and rewards
  • Positive reinforcement across the school

behaviour support

Our school has a behaviour policy which clearly outlines our high expectations to pupils, parents/carers and staff. In our school, pupils recognise, learn from and repair challenges, creating a highly positive and supportive environment. Staff work alongside pupils to help them regulate and recognise their emotions, resulting in a more positive attitude to their education.

Pupils are given the tools to self-regulate. Positive reinforcement through the use of our pupils' rewards system, which demonstrates to our pupils the benefits of appropriate behaviour both to themselves and the wider school community. The role of the pastoral team within our school ensures that any behaviours are dealt with quickly and effectively, minimising disruption to the learning environment and ensuring teaching staff feel supported. Negative behaviours are recorded on Engage, enabling the pastoral team to monitor behaviour at an individual and whole school level.

Every pupil has an Individual Support Plan, which is under constant review. Through the use of pastoral termly reviews, pupils are allowed to have a voice detailing strategies and approaches that work well for each individual, empowering staff to manage behaviour successfully. The complex needs of our pupils demand that structure and consistency of approach throughout the school day are key to successful behaviour management.

Our school is a safe place. Staff consistently model respectful and positive behaviour and work hard to foster a culture of mutual respect within our school.  A key aspect of our whole school Thrive approach focuses on the importance of the individual feeling safe to enable them to engage fully in school life.  We regularly carry out anonymous school surveys with both pupils and parents/carers that explicitly require a response about safety in school.  In addition, as part of our PSHE/registration programme, students are asked to identify any areas in the school where they may feel less safe. The information collated from this is analysed, and appropriate action is taken to mitigate any concerns.
