On Track Mildenhall and Swift House are proud to have been recognised as a School Friend by Nelson's Journey, acknowledging the school’s commitment to supporting children and young people who have experienced bereavement.
Nelson’s Journey runs a county-wide initiative to raise awareness of bereavement in classrooms and to celebrate schools that provide effective support for pupils coping with loss. On Track Mildenhall has achieved this recognition by successfully meeting all six criteria required to become a School Friend.
The need for this support is significant. It is estimated that around 1 in 29 schoolchildren in Norfolk have experienced the death of a parent or sibling. On average, every classroom will include at least one young person who has experienced the loss of a close family member.
By becoming a School Friend of Nelson’s Journey, the school has demonstrated its commitment to understanding childhood bereavement and ensuring that staff are equipped to respond with care, sensitivity and appropriate support.
Mandy Taylor, Headteacher at On Track Mildenhall, said: “We are incredibly proud to be recognised as a School Friend of Nelson’s Journey. Supporting our pupils’ emotional wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do, and this recognition reflects our commitment to ensuring that young people who have experienced bereavement feel understood, supported and able to continue their journey in education.”
This recognition highlights the school’s ongoing dedication to creating a safe, nurturing environment where all pupils feel valued and supported, particularly during challenging times.
